Fierce winds and torrential rain from Typhoon Kalmaegi have killed at least nine people in Vietnam, according to government officials.

Six of the fatalities were in Da Nang, home to one of the country's most popular beaches, and the ancient town of Hoi An, the government said in a statement.

Destructive winds and torrential rain uprooted trees, damaged homes and downed power lines after it made landfall in Vietnam.

The floods also inundated more than 103,000 houses, mostly in the country's top tourist sites of Hue and Hoi An, the government's disaster agency said in a separate report.

Before battering Vietnam, Kalmaegi left at least 188 people dead and another 135 people missing in the Philippines.

"The roof [second floor] of my house was just blown away," Nguyen Van Tam, a 42-year-old fisherman in Vietnam's Gia Lai province told AFP.

"We were all safe, [but] the typhoon was really terrible, so many trees fallen," he said, adding that his boat had survived intact. 

Tran Ngo An, 64, told AFP this was the second time he had witnessed such a typhoon.

"The other one was 10 years ago or so, but not that strong compared to this," he said.

An unusually strong storm for the region in November, Kalmaegi packed sustained winds of about 183 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 220kph over the South China Sea as it approached Vietnam.

The storm weakened as it moved inland, but forecasters have warned that Kalmaegi could dump up to 200 millimetres of additional rain in central provinces, raising fears of deadly landslides and flash floods.

Authorities said more than 537,000 people were evacuated, many by boat, as floodwaters rose and landslides loomed.

A search operation for three fishermen whose boat was swept away by strong waves in Vietnam's Quang Ngai province was suspended due to worsening weather, state media said.

In coastal cities like Da Nang, waves up to 3 metres high battered the coast and strong winds uprooted trees in Dak Lak province.

The state power company said 1.6 million clients lost power as the typhoon smashed the central coast, but service to a third of them had been restored by Friday morning. 

Storm after storm in Vietnam 

Vietnam, which gets about a dozen typhoons and storms a year, has been pummelled by a relentless series this year, leaving little time to recover between disasters.

Kalmaegi is the 13th to hit Vietnam this year.

Typhoon Ragasa dumped torrential rain in late September, then Typhoon Bualoi slammed the central coast, and Typhoon Matmo resulted in flooding in the north.

The heavy rains in late October drenched the former imperial capital Hue and the ancient town of Hoi An, both UNESCO-listed sites, turning streets into canals and flooding tens of thousands of homes.

Up to 1.7 metres of rain fell in a single 24-hour period during a downpour that broke national records.

With more than 3,200 kilometres of coastline and a network of 2,300 rivers, Vietnam faces a high risk of flooding.

Natural disasters have already left 279 people dead or missing this year and caused more than $3 billion in damage, according to Vietnam's national statistics office.

Scientists warn that a warming climate is intensifying storms and rainfall across Southeast Asia, making floods like this year's increasingly destructive and frequent.

Typhoon killed hundreds in the Philippines 

Among the deaths attributed to Kalmaegi were six people who were killed when a Philippine air force helicopter crashed in the southern province of Agusan del Sur on Tuesday.

The crew was on its way to provide humanitarian help to provinces battered by the typhoon, the military said.

It did not give the cause of the crash.

The typhoon also displaced more than 560,000 villagers, including nearly 450,000 who were evacuated to emergency shelters, the Office of Civil Defense said.

Kalmaegi dumped about one-and-a-half months' worth of rainfall in just a day on Tuesday in metropolitan Cebu, state forecaster Benison Estareja said.

It set off flash floods and caused a river and other waterways to swell in Cebu city and outlying towns.

At least 139 people died in Cebu, mostly due to drownings, while 79 others were reported missing and 69 were injured, the Office of Civil Defense said.

Krizza Espra visited a mortuary to see the bodies of her husband and three children, who were killed when the roof they were sheltering under collapsed.

She said four others in her family, including her mother and aunt, remained missing.

"I hope someone can help speed up the search for their bodies before [they] decompose. We hope we can still recognise them,"

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Junior declared a state of emergency on Thursday.

It allows the government to disburse emergency funds faster and prevent food hoarding and overpricing.

Disaster-response officials warned that another tropical cyclone from the Pacific could strengthen into a super typhoon and batter the northern Philippines early next week.
